The River

Big Dogs is located on a beautiful stretch of the Middle Oconee River in Athens, GA. The rivertrail is 3.5 miles long, which takes most folks between 2-3 hours on average. Most of the trail is an easygoing stream with a few sets of shoals to break up the ride. The Tallassee Shoals at Mitchell Bridge are the most popular for kayakers (Class I-II depending on water level).

The Middle Oconee River originates in Hall County, flows south through Athens before joining the North Oconee River, to form the Oconee River. The Oconee River flows to Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair, before merging with the Ocmulgee River in Dublin, to form the Altamaha River, which takes you to the Atlantic Ocean close to Brunswick, GA.
